Open rates are a fiction, that part is true. Apple stopped them being a real number in 2021 and most of what you see now is a mail server opening things on someone's behalf. Revenue is not a fiction.

$117,300 of tracked revenue came out of one sleeping list, and I can tell you which email did what, because clicks and replies and purchases still work exactly as they always did.

Dead channels do not have a resale value. This one does.

Some will. Between 1% and 3% usually go in the first week, and they were never going to buy anything. The people underneath them opted in because something you said landed. They did not walk out. They forgot, the way anybody forgets a thing they meant to come back to.

One client's lead had gone quiet for two years. One email later, an email with no offer in it, he asked for a call and paid $7,820.

Cold lists are rare. Unreminded ones are everywhere.

Frequency is not what burns a list. Being boring burns a list. Somebody who reads a story on Tuesday and thinks about it on Wednesday does not count the sends, and the person who unsubscribes because you wrote too often was going to unsubscribe over anything.

The real risk runs the other way. Show up once a month and you are a stranger every time, which means every email starts from zero and none of them ever build on the last one.

Nobody ever unsubscribed from something they wanted to read.

A newsletter reaches whoever happens to be on the list this week. Somebody who joined on Monday gets email 400 and has no idea what came before it. A sequence reaches every person in order, from their own day one, which means the argument arrives assembled instead of in fragments.

Two different jobs. Most businesses need the second one first.

It is good at emails. That is the problem. It is good at them for everyone at once, so the inbox now fills up with the same competent, weightless paragraphs from forty different businesses, and none of them carry the one thing that moves a decision.

What moves a decision is the Thursday you signed off from a job, the client who nearly walked, the thing you got wrong for eighteen months. A model cannot know those. It can only know that you have not told it any. Half of what I do is sit down and pull them out of you.

Use AI. It still needs something of yours to work from.

That happens when somebody writes from a brief. A brief has your offer and your bullet points in it and nothing else, so what comes back is accurate and hollow, and you can hear that it is not you.

The first thing I do is interview you and mine the stories. The sequence gets built out of things that happened to you, in the words you used when you told me. You will still read every email before it sends. You should.

If it does not sound like you, it is not finished.

Fair. Traffic is the fastest lever there is, and it is also the one you rent. Every extra 100 leads runs through the same follow-up you have now, so whatever leaks at your current volume leaks at the next one, on a bigger number and with a bigger invoice attached.

Fix the leak, then open the tap.
